Another Lip Dub

On the 15 of June, Señora Ryan e-mailed me another lip dub. This was her old High School:

The part of this lip dub that I noticed was the great energy that the people in the background had. They were very enthusiastic, the kind of thing that I would like in my lip dub.

Earlier on in the term, I had another Mentor Meeting, I showed my plan, mock-up and proposal and also where I was up to with getting rights for the song.

I also didn't get a reply when I e-mailed the person who created the StAC lip dub so I got my Mum to give the me the contact for the Media teacher at StAC and I hope to contact him soon.

Gathering more Info

Today, I emailed the man who created the StAC lip dub.

These were the first two questions that Dr Bird asked me about my proposal. I can't wait to get a response.

Completing Working Backwards

Today, I had my first meeting with Dr Bird, proposing my lip dub. The day before, I sat for a couple of hours on a plan and presentation to show Dr Bird.

This was the presentation that I created with Mum and then showed to Dr Bird. In the presentation I mentioned a detailed plan - here is the one I created.

My meeting with Dr Bird went really well. She seemed interested in the idea of a lip dub but didn't want to be the only person to make a decision involving such a big amount of money. She says that I may have to create a presentation for the Lead Team at school so that they can also have a say. Dr Bird asked me some questions that I didn't know the answers to so I will need to find out soon:

1) Which of the three songs on the poll are the most popular on youtube?
2) Who funded the StAC lip dub?
3) How did they choose the song for their lip dub?

Señora Ryan came in with me to support me because she is my mentor. I showed Dr Bird my plan, the mock up, the StAC lip dub and the song choice.

It has been a big week and now I need to get some rest.

One Step Closer

Today, Apra|Amcos replied to my e-mail. They said:

I will need to contact Jamie McDell to get the rights to her song. She also went to a Girls' School which I think will help.

If I can find out if I can have the rights to the song this weekend, then it will hopefully mean that I have even more chance of our principal giving me funding :)

Apra|Amcos - Music Rights

Today, I found out that I have a meeting with our principal to propose the lip dub on Monday! Mum and me are finalising the route and drawing a storyboard in the weekend. This is very exciting and it's really cool to see all of it coming together. I need to put together a good proposal with all the costs and how it will look so that I have a better chance of getting funding. I have started a presentation demonstrating the mock up, the costs and the storyboard.

I also had a mentor meeting today with Señora Ryan. I showed her my mock up, explaining that it would be slightly different in the real thing. She said that after the final scene, it would be quite good to have the school logo come up and fly in.

Another exciting progression is that I have found out how to acquire the rights for Life in Sunshine in three easy steps.
Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

I have sent an email to Apra|Amcos asking about how to acquire rights for a song. I hope to get a message back soon.

SNEAK PEEK!

Today, I went into school with my family and filmed a mock up of the lip dub. It was really exciting to see what it might look like. I don't yet have the rights for the song so I can't post the full mock up but I will show give you a sneak peek of what it looked like.

Once I get the rights for the song, I will be able to put the full mock up on. One of the challenges was that the 'fudge' that I did didn't look quite right because of the light. Also the timing in the song was a bit off because we filmed the whole second half once and then found out we weren't filming. This was quite annoying but I am hoping in the editing suite I will be able to change the writing after I have filmed the real thing. I'm that much closer to my proposal :).

This week I will figure out how to get the rights to the song and I will schedule a time to meet with our principal. Me and mum are also going to work together to finalise the route and work out how we can get everybody to the places they need to be.

Daniel Comes to Selwyn House

On the last day of holidays, I organised a meeting with Daniel, my steadicam contact. Just after I called him, I wrote him an email asking if he could come into school to see the spaces I was going to use and if there were any potential problems regarding the steadi-cam or anything else he could see. As we walked around, he gave me some great advice and I am very grateful.

  • The Steadicam works best if you are moving so try not to stand still
  • Create a storyboard with one panel for each place so that you and the people in the space know what to do - Draw stick figures and annotate
  • The steadicam works to stabilise natural movement
  • With a video, you need to grab people within the first 10 seconds
  • Go round the spaces with the song playing on an iPod so that you can time it
  • Kids on one rail only of the stairs or the steadicam won't be able to move properly
This was some great advice and I really appreciate it. Something else that Daniel said was to do with the pool space. He said that it would work better if I 'fudged' from somewhere to the opposite end of the school pool from the door, meaning that I wouldn't be back-tracking. Daniel also offered to operate the steadicam which was very helpful. Daniel works for I Do Films which are a company that make wedding films, so if you or someone else you know is having a wedding, please go to his website here.

Another exciting fact is my poll. The results of the 61 votes were very clear as to which song I should use - Jamie McDell - Life in Sunshine. Next step is to investigate how I go about getting the rights to use this song.

Now that I have this information, I am even closer to talking to our principal with a mock up for my proposal.

Thank you to all of the people who have voted on my blog and for viewing it - I now have nearly 1750 pageviews.

Presenting ... The Song Poll

And here it is ... The moment you've all been waiting for ... Theeeeeeeeee Song Poll:
Remember, I am looking for a song that is upbeat and happy. It needs to be catchy and will translate to a lip dub easily. Please vote only once.

What song do you think would work best for my lip dub?
Jamie McDell - Life in Sunshine
Stan Walker - Take it Easy
Dane Rumble - Not Alone
Poll Maker

As you may not know what some of these songs are, I have put in the links to the videos of the songs;
Jamie McDell - Life in Sunshine
Stan Walker - Take it Easy (The Radio Version - the one I will use if it wins the poll)
Dane Rumble - Not Alone

Once I know what song I am using and which route, I will be able create a mock up of the lip dub for my proposal.

FREAKING OUT!!! (But getting a steadicam)

Today, I called up one of my contacts, Daniel. He works for IDo Films and I knew that he owned a steadicam. I was really nervous just before calling - I think it's because I like being able to see the people I'm talking too. Before I called, I wrote down a list of questions that I wanted to ask him and I practised the beginning of the phone call with Mum!

Before

During

After

I didn't need to worry - Daniel was really nice and easy to speak with! He gave me lots of great advice about steadicams. Basically, they are like a pogo stick which a camera sits on, connected to a springy arm which is connected to a vest that the steadicam operator wears. This means that any footage that is filmed is steady even when the operator is moving around - hence the name steadicam.

A Steadicam and Operator

Daniel gave me lot of information about the cost of hiring a steadicam and an operator. I am thinking of using a half day option which is $500 for 4 hours for the steadicam plus $150 an hour for the operator. I don't think I will need the full day 8 hour option because of the small size of our school.

This was a very exciting experience. I enjoyed being a risk-taker with this and I am really proud of myself! Next step for this part of the project is putting the costs together into a proposal and meeting with my new principal and the marketing manager at my school.

Thanks heaps Daniel!

The 1st Route

Today, I got some sheets of A2 paper with the map of the school so that I could start planning my route. I went back to my data and looked at the summary which shows me which areas of the school the most people voted on. I used this, and my own personal favourites, to create a draft of a possible route. It was great to have ideas from the rest of the school because they thought of things that I would have forgotten. The final graph ended up looking like this.

Creating a route took a lot longer than I had expected. It wasn't just the places I had to think about, I needed to consider what activities were going to be happening in these places. Some activities such as Makerspace or Cooking required a teacher. This was something else that I needed to consider.

Some activities, like FPS and KidsLit, although they were popular when I looked at my survey, I could tell that they would not translate well onto a screen. For this reason, I chose activities that had lots of movement and ones where it would be clear what was going on.

The first route that I came up with is this:

I soon as I finished this route, I realised that I had forgotten a couple of important things. For example the Spanish Room (sorry Señora Ryan LOL) and the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme that runs at Selwyn House.

I will continue to create drafts and after about three or four drafts I will have a mentor meeting with Señora Ryan and get some feedback from her and my Mum on which route they think will translate best to screen. I need to decide on a route soon so that I can create a mock up of the lip dub for my proposal.

Google Form

Last night, I sent out a Google Form to find out more about what the Selwyn House School thought of our school and what things make it special. I sent the form to:
a) Years 5 - 8 Teachers and Students
b) Support and Specialist Staff
c) Year 1 - 4 Teachers (for them to fill in the form as a class)

The google form I sent to Year 5 - 8 looked like this

The same form was sent to Year 1 - 4 Teachers and Support/Specialist Team except I deleted the last question.

Even in that short amount of time, I have already received thirty responses. The four most popular places have been; The Playground (17), The Atrium (14), The Food Tech Room (13) and Other (13).

I can't wait to get more answers and I will use this information to help me to develop a route that I will most likely use. This will also be useful for my proposal when I create my mock up of the lip dub.

Working Backwards

Today, I created a plan of what I need to do by working backwards from my main goal this Term and the beginning of next Term, talking to our principal to get funding. Here is what I planned (excuse the messy hand-writing):

I am planning on creating the Google Form for the school tomorrow. When I set it all out like this, it looks quite manageable.

Here's another lip dub. Notice that they don't really showcase the school in any way.

My First Mentor Meeting

On Tuesday, I had my first mentor meeting with Señora Ryan. I told her what my personal project was about and then how my progress had gone so far. She thought that I was on the right track and didn't need much help from her for the time being. Her advice to me was that I had a mock up of what the lip dub might look like when I propose to get funding by just using a handheld camera and maybe getting one of my peers to walk around with me so that our principal can have a good idea about what it might look like. Then I will most likely have a better chance of getting funding.

While I'm here, here's another clip to get you thinking. What parts of the school do you think I should showcase? I think, definitely the music room, all of our specialists and the IB Programme.
