I CAN FILM!!!!

So, My big news is, that I found out that the school is going to fund my lip dub!!!

(I found this out in about week 6)

CTV (Canterbury Television) are coming into Selwyn to do three 4 minute sections. The first one is going to be about the pre-school, the second one is directed at parents with Dr Bird talking and the last one, they have decided, will be my lip dub.

Here is what I've been doing to prepare:

On Tuesday in week 8, I did a lot of work, modifying the plan and creating slips of paper for each teacher, saying where their class is going. Here is a brief rundown of how each class is split...

On Wednesday in week 8, the marketing team came to my house and I showed them my mock up, plan and the slips for the teachers. I have found out that I will be filming on Tuesday the 5th of August. We start school on the 22nd of July so I will film in week 3. I have also been told that I can go to the editing suite at CTV to see how they edit and hopefully help them edit the lip dub. They will also give me the edited lip dub so that I can show it to you on my blog and the school can use it for marketing.

I told them that I had acquired permission to use the song and I showed my progress through this blog. Now that I have permission to use the song, I can put my mock-up lip dub on the blog.

(Please excuse the bad sound quality and lighting issues.)

Tonight, I will present to the whole staff at the staff meeting after school. I will hand out the slips and also will show them a short clip of the StAC lipdub. Tomorrow, I will post what happened and how it went.

Completing Working Backwards

Today, I had my first meeting with Dr Bird, proposing my lip dub. The day before, I sat for a couple of hours on a plan and presentation to show Dr Bird.

This was the presentation that I created with Mum and then showed to Dr Bird. In the presentation I mentioned a detailed plan - here is the one I created.

My meeting with Dr Bird went really well. She seemed interested in the idea of a lip dub but didn't want to be the only person to make a decision involving such a big amount of money. She says that I may have to create a presentation for the Lead Team at school so that they can also have a say. Dr Bird asked me some questions that I didn't know the answers to so I will need to find out soon:

1) Which of the three songs on the poll are the most popular on youtube?
2) Who funded the StAC lip dub?
3) How did they choose the song for their lip dub?

Señora Ryan came in with me to support me because she is my mentor. I showed Dr Bird my plan, the mock up, the StAC lip dub and the song choice.

It has been a big week and now I need to get some rest.

Apra|Amcos - Music Rights

Today, I found out that I have a meeting with our principal to propose the lip dub on Monday! Mum and me are finalising the route and drawing a storyboard in the weekend. This is very exciting and it's really cool to see all of it coming together. I need to put together a good proposal with all the costs and how it will look so that I have a better chance of getting funding. I have started a presentation demonstrating the mock up, the costs and the storyboard.

I also had a mentor meeting today with Señora Ryan. I showed her my mock up, explaining that it would be slightly different in the real thing. She said that after the final scene, it would be quite good to have the school logo come up and fly in.

Another exciting progression is that I have found out how to acquire the rights for Life in Sunshine in three easy steps.
Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

I have sent an email to Apra|Amcos asking about how to acquire rights for a song. I hope to get a message back soon.

Daniel Comes to Selwyn House

On the last day of holidays, I organised a meeting with Daniel, my steadicam contact. Just after I called him, I wrote him an email asking if he could come into school to see the spaces I was going to use and if there were any potential problems regarding the steadi-cam or anything else he could see. As we walked around, he gave me some great advice and I am very grateful.

  • The Steadicam works best if you are moving so try not to stand still
  • Create a storyboard with one panel for each place so that you and the people in the space know what to do - Draw stick figures and annotate
  • The steadicam works to stabilise natural movement
  • With a video, you need to grab people within the first 10 seconds
  • Go round the spaces with the song playing on an iPod so that you can time it
  • Kids on one rail only of the stairs or the steadicam won't be able to move properly
This was some great advice and I really appreciate it. Something else that Daniel said was to do with the pool space. He said that it would work better if I 'fudged' from somewhere to the opposite end of the school pool from the door, meaning that I wouldn't be back-tracking. Daniel also offered to operate the steadicam which was very helpful. Daniel works for I Do Films which are a company that make wedding films, so if you or someone else you know is having a wedding, please go to his website here.

Another exciting fact is my poll. The results of the 61 votes were very clear as to which song I should use - Jamie McDell - Life in Sunshine. Next step is to investigate how I go about getting the rights to use this song.

Now that I have this information, I am even closer to talking to our principal with a mock up for my proposal.

Thank you to all of the people who have voted on my blog and for viewing it - I now have nearly 1750 pageviews.

Another Possible Route

Before I created the route, I used arrow sticky notes and put them on the map, showing where the important things that weren't named on the map were. For example, the Food Tech Room and the Technology/MakerSpace Room. In this way, I made sure that I remembered everything. I then mapped out the route on the map. Here is what it looked like.

You can't quite see but it starts at the tennis court and ends at atrium. There is a 'Fudge' at the cybrary to 3D because I couldn't figure out another way to get to a classroom without backtracking. The final plan looked like this;

The unused classes will be used for lining the hallways. I will create another route soon so that I can create the mock up for the proposal which I will have to do next term with our new principal because our old one just left. You'll notice I added Spanish this time Señora Ryan :) LOL

The 1st Route

Today, I got some sheets of A2 paper with the map of the school so that I could start planning my route. I went back to my data and looked at the summary which shows me which areas of the school the most people voted on. I used this, and my own personal favourites, to create a draft of a possible route. It was great to have ideas from the rest of the school because they thought of things that I would have forgotten. The final graph ended up looking like this.

Creating a route took a lot longer than I had expected. It wasn't just the places I had to think about, I needed to consider what activities were going to be happening in these places. Some activities such as Makerspace or Cooking required a teacher. This was something else that I needed to consider.

Some activities, like FPS and KidsLit, although they were popular when I looked at my survey, I could tell that they would not translate well onto a screen. For this reason, I chose activities that had lots of movement and ones where it would be clear what was going on.

The first route that I came up with is this:

I soon as I finished this route, I realised that I had forgotten a couple of important things. For example the Spanish Room (sorry Señora Ryan LOL) and the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme that runs at Selwyn House.

I will continue to create drafts and after about three or four drafts I will have a mentor meeting with Señora Ryan and get some feedback from her and my Mum on which route they think will translate best to screen. I need to decide on a route soon so that I can create a mock up of the lip dub for my proposal.
