On Air!

My reflection for today - Speaking live on television is hard!

Today I spoke on Canterbury Live after they played my lip dub. It was so exciting to see my lip dub finally go live and to realise that I have actually made it to the end of my personal project successfully!

I have had some awesome feedback from lots of people about my interview. It was a hard thing to do, but I am glad I did it.

The Countdown Ends!

Yay! Tomorrow is the day I go to CTV and my lip dub gets shown on their "Canterbury Live" programme at 4.30pm. Lisa sent through some possible questions that I might get asked, but she warned me that Andrea, the host, will probably go off track and ask me some things that aren't on this list!

How did you come up with the idea of the lip dub for your school project?
How much planning did it take?
You asked permission from Jamie McDell to use her song - how did you go about this and what was her response?
You involved the whole school - how many students and staff did this include and how long did you have to rehearse for?
It was all done in one shot - what kind of organisation did this take?
You got to be involved with the editing here at CTV - what was that experience like?
What was your favourite part of the whole process?
Are you proud of what you managed to achieve?

Yesterday, the lip dub was shown to the entire school at assembly. Afterwards I got a lovely email from one of the Junior School teachers:

"The gorgeous part of today was watching the Year1 girls face's as they viewed it. They were mesmerised by it and loved seeing themselves especially. I hope it ends up on the website so we can all view it over and over."

Nearly there! My board is looking great! I can't believe I am almost at the end!

Clipper Board

I found a great piece of clip art today that I will use as the background for the information on my planning board. By making screen shots of pictures from the lip dub, I can add them to the clip art of the movie clipper board. This is the result:

Today I did lots of work putting my ideas from my blog and my essay into bullet points so that there isn't too much information for my audience to read on my board. When I print them out tomorrow at school, I will get a better idea of whether the colours I have chosen work or not.

Tomorrow morning I play my lip dub in assembly to the whole school! I hope they enjoy it!!

3 Days to Go!

Today I have continued to work on my presentation board. I have heard from CTV and they want me at the studio on Tuesday at 4.15pm, ready to go live at 4.30pm! Next week at school we start putting everything together ready for Thursday! It's going to be a busy week!

Another Sneak Peek

This week, I have been working on the presentation of my Personal Project. Unfortunately, the movie theatre idea may not work, but if it doesn't, I would still like a mini theatre but have 3-4 iMacs with headphones so that people can view the lip dub without being disturbed. I will also have my padlet that I have created for feedback and my orange board with black clapperboards and my information.

Feedback

Hooray! I am so excited that my lip dub is going to be shown on TV soon. Yesterday the lip dub was shown to the staff, and although I couldn't be there, I got lots of fantastic feedback, including:

Wanted to let you know how fantastic the Lip Dub looks and how superbly organised it was.
We are very proud of your efforts - look forward to the positive fallout it will bring our way.
It couldn't have turned out better.
It is obvious the careful creative planning you have put into this.
A fantastic legacy to leave for the school.

Getting the Lip Dub Back

Today, I got the lip dub back from CTV. I was so excited. But, there were some things that I needed to change. We sent an email back to the lady who sent it to us with a couple of changes. I will show you when I get it back but for now, it is a surprise.

I have also completed my Process paragraph of my essay and started my conclusion.

Editing The Lip Dub

On Friday, I was able to go to CTV and watched and helped Alex (the cameraman) and Nick (the editor) to edit my lip dub. They used a program called Final Cut Pro which is like a high tech, flash version of iMovie. First, we changed around the colours because it was a bit dark in some places. We also added the school logo to the beginning and end of the lip dub with a cross dissolve into and out of the clip. Near the end, I was able to add in the words that I had planned out. It was a great experience. I saw some awesome things including two computers that are essentially like two desktops except they are both open and on different computers! So cool!

Outside CTV
I learnt that any frames with effects, sound, text or similar must be rendered. There are about 25 frames to a second. In one of the Lord of the Rings movies, it took 24 hours to render one frame. After we had finished and I was waiting for Dad to pick me up, Nick showed me around the studio. I saw their makeshift recording studio. After the earthquakes, CTV lost their building. Their makeshift studio is too small for more than one set. In between two of the shows, there is just a five minute break for them to switch the sets. Nick said it is like chaos but as soon as they are on air, it is calm like nothing happened. :)
Beginning the editing

During this week I also had another mentor meeting with Señora Ryan. She seemed really excited and we had a look at my essay. I also wrote the 3rd paragraph, Planning, for my essay.

The Editing Screen

On September 2nd, they will be showing my lip dub on CTV and I have been asked to come in and have an interview about the process. I am really excited.

Filming Day!

Today was the big day and I thought about my lip dub throughout it. During lunchtime, I setup the Tech Room with help from my teacher and the Atrium with help from some other girls. Then, just after lunch, we all gathered below the stage. Then we dispersed to our starting positions. From then on, anything that needed to be fixed, couldn’t be fixed.

The first time we ran through it was quite bad probably because the cameraman hadn’t been through the route yet and was getting directions fired at him by Dad who was holding the sound system. We did it a second time and it got better. The third time was good but there were some fix ups that needed to happen. The cameraman walked round slowly so that he definitely knew where he was going.

After a final shoot, I got up and said thank-you to all of the girls for their enthusiasm and to the teachers for interrupting their programme. And then, it was all over. This is a sneak peak!

I don't currently have access to the footage at the present point but I will have it on Friday when I go to the CTV editing suite in the morning, where I will see, find out about the editing and hopefully do a bit myself.

Whole School Practice

Friday was a very exciting day. Just after lunch at school, we had a final rehearsal for the CTV filming of my lip dub. Everything went so well and there was a great buzz around the school. We ran it through three times with Dad filming on the iPad. Here is a sneak peak at the rehearsal. (I don’t want to show the real thing just yet.)

As you can see, it was very successful but I still have a few more gaps to fill. On Sunday night, I watched it through with Mum and we noted down all of the gaps that needed to be filled and all of the fix-ups that needed to happen. We also decided that we would have words flashing up on the screen saying what we were doing. They were things like ‘We innovate’ ‘We design’ ‘ We create’ and at the very end, we decided to put the school motto ‘I am, I can, I ought, I will’ but we changed it up a bit to say ‘We can. We ought. We will. We are Selwyn House.’

So excited for Tuesday - I hope the weather will be fine!

The Staff Meeting

On Tuesday last week, I attended the Selwyn House staff meeting where I presented my lip dub idea. The teachers were very supportive and I handed out the slips that I created. I showed a short clip of the StAC lip dub and a short clip of my mock up. I told them that I needed them to practice any moves with their class, brief them and choose who will be where.

I realised as I was presenting that I hadn't created a list for the preschool or the specialist teachers so . . .
That is what I have been doing for the past week on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. I really need to print them out soon as it is very soon that the lip dub will be filmed (Tuesday.)

On Thursday, I e-mailed all of the classroom teachers with the information that they need to show their class. It included two lipdub links and my blog, and I told them that if they needed me to come and see their class that I was available.

I fear that some teachers may not have talked to their class about the lipdub yet. So today I re-emailed them say that if they hadn't already, could they please talk to their class about their lip dub, prep any moves and choose who is going to go where if their class needs to get split up.

I CAN FILM!!!!

So, My big news is, that I found out that the school is going to fund my lip dub!!!

(I found this out in about week 6)

CTV (Canterbury Television) are coming into Selwyn to do three 4 minute sections. The first one is going to be about the pre-school, the second one is directed at parents with Dr Bird talking and the last one, they have decided, will be my lip dub.

Here is what I've been doing to prepare:

On Tuesday in week 8, I did a lot of work, modifying the plan and creating slips of paper for each teacher, saying where their class is going. Here is a brief rundown of how each class is split...

On Wednesday in week 8, the marketing team came to my house and I showed them my mock up, plan and the slips for the teachers. I have found out that I will be filming on Tuesday the 5th of August. We start school on the 22nd of July so I will film in week 3. I have also been told that I can go to the editing suite at CTV to see how they edit and hopefully help them edit the lip dub. They will also give me the edited lip dub so that I can show it to you on my blog and the school can use it for marketing.

I told them that I had acquired permission to use the song and I showed my progress through this blog. Now that I have permission to use the song, I can put my mock-up lip dub on the blog.

(Please excuse the bad sound quality and lighting issues.)

Tonight, I will present to the whole staff at the staff meeting after school. I will hand out the slips and also will show them a short clip of the StAC lipdub. Tomorrow, I will post what happened and how it went.

Completing Working Backwards

Today, I had my first meeting with Dr Bird, proposing my lip dub. The day before, I sat for a couple of hours on a plan and presentation to show Dr Bird.

This was the presentation that I created with Mum and then showed to Dr Bird. In the presentation I mentioned a detailed plan - here is the one I created.

My meeting with Dr Bird went really well. She seemed interested in the idea of a lip dub but didn't want to be the only person to make a decision involving such a big amount of money. She says that I may have to create a presentation for the Lead Team at school so that they can also have a say. Dr Bird asked me some questions that I didn't know the answers to so I will need to find out soon:

1) Which of the three songs on the poll are the most popular on youtube?
2) Who funded the StAC lip dub?
3) How did they choose the song for their lip dub?

Señora Ryan came in with me to support me because she is my mentor. I showed Dr Bird my plan, the mock up, the StAC lip dub and the song choice.

It has been a big week and now I need to get some rest.

Apra|Amcos - Music Rights

Today, I found out that I have a meeting with our principal to propose the lip dub on Monday! Mum and me are finalising the route and drawing a storyboard in the weekend. This is very exciting and it's really cool to see all of it coming together. I need to put together a good proposal with all the costs and how it will look so that I have a better chance of getting funding. I have started a presentation demonstrating the mock up, the costs and the storyboard.

I also had a mentor meeting today with Señora Ryan. I showed her my mock up, explaining that it would be slightly different in the real thing. She said that after the final scene, it would be quite good to have the school logo come up and fly in.

Another exciting progression is that I have found out how to acquire the rights for Life in Sunshine in three easy steps.
Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

I have sent an email to Apra|Amcos asking about how to acquire rights for a song. I hope to get a message back soon.

Another Possible Route

Before I created the route, I used arrow sticky notes and put them on the map, showing where the important things that weren't named on the map were. For example, the Food Tech Room and the Technology/MakerSpace Room. In this way, I made sure that I remembered everything. I then mapped out the route on the map. Here is what it looked like.

You can't quite see but it starts at the tennis court and ends at atrium. There is a 'Fudge' at the cybrary to 3D because I couldn't figure out another way to get to a classroom without backtracking. The final plan looked like this;

The unused classes will be used for lining the hallways. I will create another route soon so that I can create the mock up for the proposal which I will have to do next term with our new principal because our old one just left. You'll notice I added Spanish this time Señora Ryan :) LOL

The 1st Route

Today, I got some sheets of A2 paper with the map of the school so that I could start planning my route. I went back to my data and looked at the summary which shows me which areas of the school the most people voted on. I used this, and my own personal favourites, to create a draft of a possible route. It was great to have ideas from the rest of the school because they thought of things that I would have forgotten. The final graph ended up looking like this.

Creating a route took a lot longer than I had expected. It wasn't just the places I had to think about, I needed to consider what activities were going to be happening in these places. Some activities such as Makerspace or Cooking required a teacher. This was something else that I needed to consider.

Some activities, like FPS and KidsLit, although they were popular when I looked at my survey, I could tell that they would not translate well onto a screen. For this reason, I chose activities that had lots of movement and ones where it would be clear what was going on.

The first route that I came up with is this:

I soon as I finished this route, I realised that I had forgotten a couple of important things. For example the Spanish Room (sorry Señora Ryan LOL) and the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme that runs at Selwyn House.

I will continue to create drafts and after about three or four drafts I will have a mentor meeting with Señora Ryan and get some feedback from her and my Mum on which route they think will translate best to screen. I need to decide on a route soon so that I can create a mock up of the lip dub for my proposal.
